Coal tailings and historic miner cabins still remain from a booming coal industry in the early 20th century, and are the backdrop of today’s picturesque main street of Madrid, New Mexico. Located on NM Highway 14, also known as the Turquoise Trail, halfway between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, this colorful Western outpost boasts original shops, galleries and restaurants, all just steps away from Java Junction.
our origins
Free-roaming dogs outnumbered businesses in Madrid in the late 1980’s when my mother-in-law opened the Java Junction coffee shop with one battered espresso machine and a vision. She turned the upstairs apartment into a bed & breakfast, added merchandise and local baked goods to the coffee bar downstairs, and sold it to me and my husband in 2006. I continue to enjoy running this depot for locals and visitors alike, and providing a gathering space to experience Madrid's unique juxtaposition of Western tradition and creative personalities, all while (quite literally!) fueling the diverse energies of our small community.
